    Pokémon is a Japanese media franchise consisting of video gamesanimated series and filmsa trading card game, and other related media. The franchise takes place in a shared universe in which humans co-exist with creatures known as Pokémon, a large variety of species endowed with special powers. The franchise’s primary target audience is children aged 5 to 12, but it is known to attract people of all ages.


    Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version are 1996 role-playing video games (RPGs) developed by Game Freak for the Game Boy. They are the first installments of the Pokémon video game series and were first released in Japan as Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green, followed by the special edition Pocket Monsters Blue later that year. The games were released internationally in 1998 and 1999 as Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, while an enhanced version named Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition was released in Japan in 1998 and in other regions in 1999 and 2000.

    Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are 2022 role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch, and they were released on 18 November 2022. The games later received a downloadable content (DLC) expansion pass storyline, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. The first part, The Teal Mask, released on 13 September 2023, and the second part, The Indigo Disk, was released on 14 December 2023.


    Pokémon video games have been released in a wide variety of genres and are considered the core series of the franchise. Various spin-off games also exist, such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, a roguelike RPG series, Pokémon Ranger, an action RPG series, and Detective Pikachu (2018), an adventure game. Pokémon games, in particular the core RPGs, are commonly classified in generations. For example, Junichi Masuda referred to Diamond and Pearl (2006) as Gen 4, and X and Y (2013) as the 6th generation.

    The Adventure of Kirby

    Kirby is an action-platform video game series developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. The series centers around the adventures of Kirby as he fights to protect and save his home on the distant Planet Popstar from a variety of threats. The majority of the games in the series are side-scrolling platformers with puzzle-solving and beat ’em up elements. Kirby has the ability to inhale enemies and objects into his mouth, spitting them out as a projectile or eating them. If he inhales certain enemies, he can gain the powers or properties of that enemy manifesting as a new weapon or power-up called a Copy Ability. The series is intended to be easy to pick up and play even for people unfamiliar with action games, while at the same time offering additional challenge and depth for more experienced players to come back to.


    The first game in the Kirby series, Kirby’s Dream Land for the original Game Boy, was released in Japan on April 27, 1992, and later in North America, Europe and Australasia in August that year. It consists of:

    • Introduced Kirby’s ability to inhale enemies and objects
    • Not yet able to use Copy Abilities

    Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a 2022 action-platform game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the thirteenth mainline installment in the Kirby series, second on the Switch, as well as the first game in the series in full 3D, excluding spin-offs. It consists of:

    • 7 Worlds
    • Introduced 3D terrain, allowing Kirby to not be limited to side-scrollers
    • 35 Copy Abilities

    The Kirby games have received reception that ranges from mixed to very favorable reviews by players and critics. According to Metacritic reviews: Kirby: Canvas Curse and Kirby’s Epic Yarn are the most acclaimed games in the series, while Kirby Battle Royale and Team Kirby Clash Deluxe are the lowest-rated. Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby: Squeak Squad are respectively the highest-rated and the lowest-rated mainline series games.

    Nintendo Co., Ltd.[c] is a Japanese multinational video game company headquartered in Kyoto. It develops, publishes, and releases both video games and video game consoles.

    Nintendo has produced some of the most successful consoles in the video game industry, including the Game Boy (1989), the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1991), the Nintendo DS (2004), the Wii (2006), and the Nintendo Switch (2017). It has created or published numerous major franchises, including MarioDonkey KongThe Legend of ZeldaAnimal Crossing, and Pokémon. The company’s mascot, Mario, is among the most famous fictional characters, and Nintendo’s other characters—including LuigiDonkey KongSamusLinkKirby, and Pikachu—have attained international recognition.     In 1980, one of the first handheld video game systems, the Game & Watch, was created by Yokoi from the technology used in portable calculators. It became one of Nintendo’s most successful products, with over 43.4 million units sold worldwide during its production period, and for which 59 games were made in total.On January 16, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed via Nintendo’s official channels, introducing its new design and magnetic Joy-Con controllers, as well as brief footage of a Mario Kart game. A Nintendo Direct centered around the console is scheduled for April 2, 2025.

    Nintendo’s central focus is the research, development, production, and distribution of entertainment products—primarily video game software and hardware and card games. Its main markets are Japan, America, and Europe, and more than 70% of its total sales come from the latter two territories. As of March 2023, Nintendo has sold over 836 million game consoles, for which more than 5.592 billion video games have been sold globally.
